New Territory Fund
A Theatre Board of the Australia Council development initiative
The New Territory Fund is an initiative of the Theatre Board of the Australia Council that provides an opportunity for independent theatre artists and groups living in the Northern Territory, to apply for one-off grants that support the creative development and/or production stages of new theatre works. Grant requests can be made for up to $30,000.
Independent theatre artists and groups may apply for creative development and/or production expenses of new theatre work. (A ‘new theatre work’ is an original theatre work that has not been publically presented.)
Organisations are not eligible to apply unless they are small groups/collectives of independent artists. Organisations may nominate to be the presenting partner for production applications submitted by independent artists and groups.
Creative development or production?
‘Creative development’ funds support the development stages of a new work. This includes activities such as research, creative development workshops and showings, writers’ commissions, or a combination of these (or other) creative development activities. A presenting partner is not required for creative development applications.
‘Production’ funds support the rehearsal and presentation stages of a new theatre work. All production applications must include a letter from a presenting partner who contributes resources to the presentation of the project. This letter confirming their commitment and contribution must be submitted with the application by the closing date.
What is a presenting partner?
A presenting partner is any entity which you identify as a key partner for the project, and which contributes resources to the presentation of the project. They are most commonly venues or producers, but can be non-theatre entities, and can be based outside of the NT. A presenting partner is defined by two factors, both the resources they brings to a project (in-kind and/ or cash), and the importance of their relationship to the project. The amount of resources contributed will be assessed in the context of the current local environment.
Brown’s Mart
Brown’s Mart is offering support to artists and groups wishing to apply for grants from the New Territory Fund. This support can take a number of forms:
- Venue support – the provision of space at Brown’s Mart for workshops, rehearsals and performance and similar activities;
- Administrative and production support – the provision of staff to undertake marketing, securing and managing sponsorship, production support and general administration in relation to theatre activity;
- Financial support;
- Auspicing
- A professional reference.
Brown’s Mart Arts is particularly interested in supporting, as a “presenting partner”, productions scheduled for performance between 1 December 2011 and 31 December 2012, and this support is not tied to the use of Brown’s Mart as the performance venue.
Applying to Brown’s Mart
If you wish to make an application to the Australia Council Theatre Board for funding from the New Theatre Fund and wish to include in that application a letter from Brown’s Mart Arts committing support to your project either as a presenting partner or in other forms you will need to apply to us in writing for that support. Please note our requirements in the document ‘Statement of Support for New Territory Fund’, which you can download below.
In offering support to artists and groups, Brown’s Mart will take into account the following factors:
