About CAP
The purpose of the Central Australian Producer Program is to develop the capacity of the Central Australian theatre and performing arts sector. The CAP program targets the development of skills and structural processes of individuals, groups and organisations who are developing and/or presenting theatre and performance in Central Australia.
CAP has been developed to address the current skills gap identified by performance makers in this region.
From consultations held in 2009, with the theatre and performing arts sector in Central Australia, these gaps were identified as:
1) Feelings of isolation and lack of connection with the national theatre and performing arts community
2) Limited skills and resource base
3) Lack of mentoring, training and professional development opportunities
4) Lack of support to new local works to be developed through to presentation stage; and
5) a qualitative gap between the standard of locally produced product and a nationally acceptable benchmark
Who is the CAP Program for?
A) INDEPENDENT PRODUCERS – Artists or arts workers wanting to enhance their capacity to produce and deliver projects or programs in theatre and performance.
B) PERFORMANCE MAKERS – Groups or Organisations based in Central Australia that can create and deliver public performance. . This can include outdoor performance, text-based theatre, self-devised or group-devised performance, physical or movement theatre, live art, site-specific performance, puppetry, opera, musical theatre, visual theatre, theatre for young people, performance by people with mixed abilities, circus, sideshow, contemporary and avant-garde performance, youth theatre, cabaret, burlesque, etc.
What is a producer?
Producers are individuals who can act as a catalyst between an artists idea and its final production.
Producers can help to hone, test, suggest and implement changes to the process of making the idea happen. This includes financial, logistic, artistic and structural considerations in a work finding its widest and most receptive audiences.
In a continuum that starts with an idea of an artist or artists and culminates in this idea realized in front of or inside of an audience, the Producer plays a key role in guiding and supporting the product through needs identified by both artists, venues, and the producing organisations.
How does the CAP program work?
The CAP Program is by application only.
Applications close C.O.B Monday 4 April 2011
Expressions of Interest are sought from:
INDEPENDENT PRODUCERS
Individuals who are interested in increasing their skills in producing, this program will match the selected individuals with an active Performance Maker. If you know of a group who you would like to be matched with, then they will need to submit a Performance Maker Expression of Interest application. If applying with a selected group in mind, make sure both applications cross-reference each other.

What is the Assessment Process?
An external panel drawn from Arts NT staff, Peer members and 32˚ will assess all applications.
Three (3) Groups/Organisations and (3) Individuals will be selected to participate in the CAP program.
What is the Timeline?
The CAP program will take place over a six-month period. CAP supports the successful individuals to be ‘attached’ as producers to the groups/organisations for this six-month period.
How will it work?
The CAP program has multiple modes of delivery including:
• Workshop blocks in producing, project management and a critical analysis of the Australian theatre scene including overviews of other national producing and presenting bodies from experts in theatre and performing arts.
• Ongoing mentoring, organisational and logistical support responsive to the needs of the participants by the Program Producer Alex Kelly, the Producer at 32˚, and external mentors where appropriate
• Potential residencies or secondments with other producing organisations
The program will be tailored according to the needs of the three Independent Producer participants.
All travel and accommodation for each Independent Producer will be supported as part of the program and each Producer will receive an honorarium of $2,000 for the program period.
The CAP Program is an NT Government initiative managed by 32° – Browns Mart Production House and supported by Arts NT and Red HOT Arts Central Australia.
