SUMMARY:Darwin vs Matilda: a live radio play
DESCRIPTION: Darwin vs Matilda premiered at the Darwin Festival in 2010 for one tantalizing performance that enthralled audiences and left us wanting more. Now it is back, better than before, with a fully-developed production at the Darwin Entertainment Centre produced by Brown’s Mart and 32˚. Written by Levin Diatschenko, Darwin vs. Matilda is a live radio play (actually a ‘radio play within a play’) set in the 1930s that features music and sound effects created entirely by the multi-talented cast on stage. Funny and magical, Darwin vs Matilda mines the Territory’s past for an assortment of true Australian pioneers such as Inspector Foelsche, Borroloola hermit Roger Jose, and mining giant Ping Que, to create a story that is carnivalesque, entertaining, and very Territory. In a mythical past cyclone Matilda bears down on Darwin and the strange assortment of characters assembled at the town's watering holes. As the eye of the storm settles over the town, a carnival of mysterious strangers appears, peddling healing elixirs and mystic oddities from foreign lands. Matilda's kissing booth casts a magnetic spell over the locals, but each man who approaches the enchantress finds a dagger pressed against his heart. Enter a new stranger. Will he get the girl, or a dagger in the heart? Shows: Thu 24 - Sat 26 Nov, 8pm; Fri 25 Nov, 10am; Sun 27 Nov 3pm Price: Full $27.50 | DEC Members $25 | Conc/Grp 6+ $22.50 Tickets: Darwin Entertainment Centre Box Office: 8980 3333 | Darwin Entertainment Centre website Website: www.darwinvsmatilda.com [caption id="attachment_2058" align="aligncenter" width="640" caption="Director Robbie Hoad & writer Levin Diatschenko"][/caption]

SUMMARY:The Interminable Suicide Of Gregory Church. Written and Performed by Daniel Kitson
DESCRIPTION:‘The Interminable Suicide of Gregory Church’ - Fringe First Winner -2009 “Eccentric, Far fetched and Unbelievably Good” The Telegraph - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Gregory had fifty seven letters to write. He’d never written that many letters, not in one go. In fact, he’d never written a single letter and it was taking significantly longer than he’d anticipated. He’d started, full of optimism, curiously enough, at 9 am and now here he was 8 hours later half way through letter twenty four. He glanced at his watch and then at the noose hanging over his head. Gregory sighed. Had he known how long suicide letters take, he thought, he wouldn’t have cancelled the milk for the morning. The story of a death postponed by life. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - “An inspired fictional anecdote that flowers into an unobtrusive masterpiece of modern low-key storytelling…funny, poignant, richly observant” The Scotsman “Kitson’s genius emerges, once again. Interminably talented, and staggeringly good.” The List “An ingeniously simple and hopeful piece of work, turning loneliness into communion.” The Independent - - - - - - - : : : { REVIEWS } : : : - - - - - - - Review in The Telegraph: Edinburgh Festival 2009: Daniel Kitson-The Interminable Suicide of Gregory Church Edinburgh Festival Guide :Full Listing Review in The Guardian: The Interminable Suicide of Gregory Church Review in Click Liverpool - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Daniel Kitson's website: www.danielkitson.com

SUMMARY:'Beauty Queen of Leenane', by Darwin Theatre Company
DESCRIPTION: THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE The Darwin Theatre Company Set in a backwater village in the West of Ireland, The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a brilliant black comedy by award winning Irish playwright Martin McDonagh. Maureen’s sisters have flown the nest, escaping the drab family home but Maureen, who has a history of mental illness, remains at home, trapped in a dysfunctional relationship with her mother. The arrival of an invitation sparks hopes of a last-chance romance and offers Maureen the prospect of an escape to a new life. Things might just be looking up for her… But not if the interfering Mag has anything to do with it. With hope scuppered and long suppressed hatred unleashed Maureen becomes intent on wreaking a terrible revenge, which will bring the play to its horrifying conclusion. Presented biennially since 2000, we aim to promote significant examples of local and international dance screen work, and to represent a broad variety of dance genres from contemporary through to classical forms. Sitting between the performing arts and film culture, this film festival caters to both dance and film audiences with a focus on screen musicals, music videos and contemporary dance on screen. These genres cover the breadth and depth of the art form, from the rich cinematic history of the film musical through to popular dance forms and experimental video techniques featured in music clips, to the poetics of the world's greatest contemporary choreographers. Past festivals have attracted a high calibre of individual contributors such as filmmakers: Henry Chalfant, Sophie Fiennes, Antony Atanasio, Octavio Iturbe, Andrew Lancaster, Spike Jonze and John Smith; choreographers: Wim Vandekeybus, Anna Teresa de Keersmaeker, Lloyd Newson, Jonathan Burrows and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and companies: Ultima Vez, DV8 Dance Theatre, Ballet Frankfurt, Black Grace and Les Ballets C de la B.

SUMMARY:Info session with Younes Bachir
DESCRIPTION:32˚ Production House and Tashmadada invite you to an 'in conversation' session with Younes Bachir, ex-actor and collaborator of the Spanish company “La Fura del Baus”. Hosted by Deborah Leiser-Moore. [caption id="attachment_1231" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Younes Bachir"][/caption] Younes will be in Darwin to invite interested artists to take part in a two week intensive workshop which will culminate in two thrilling public performances in 2011 . This extremely rare opportunity will give Northern Territory artists the unique chance to learn the process of creating a performance using the Andante performance language and to be part of an international collaboration of an exceptionally high calibre. La Fura Dels Baus has a reputation for testing and crossing the barriers of performance with anarchic, graphic and unpredictable modes of audience engagement. The iconic performance style that La Fura developed during their early work remains embedded in the philosophy and practice of their current work. This is a performance language that exposes audiences to provocative, violent and sometimes terrifying physical and visual constructs without putting them in any real danger or risk. The Andante workshop explores the application of this language and is open to artists from all disciplines including actors, performers, musicians, composers through to visual and graphic artists. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session and will be held at Browns Mart Theatre on Sunday 15th August at 8pm. Please RSVP at admin@brownsmart.com.au or 08 8981 6876. This presentation has been supported by the Australian National University Centre for European Studies and the Spanish Ministry of Culture through the Spanish Cultural Cooperation Program For more information on Younes Bachir please visit http://www.myspace.com/younesbachir For more information on Deborah Leiser-Moore and Tashmadada please visit www.tashmadada.com

SUMMARY:Peeled by Cathy Strickland starring Di Smith
DESCRIPTION:September 30th Oct 2nd 7pm Tickets are limited so books now: Brown's Mart Theatre is proud to present "Peeled" Di Smith undresses from the inside out in a psychological burlesque. She's flawed, fragile, funny, fierce, frank and the veils keep dropping. With deftly delivered one-liners, songs and some 'punch in the gut' twists, you too will be Peeled. Peeled premiered at this years Adelaide Fringe Festival and received rave reviews. Including this one from the Adelaide Sunday Mail. "Di Smith delivers three contrasting ladies from three different walks of life in this solo triple threat. Anyone who comes for steaming flesh will discover assured acting as Smith reminds us what a versatile performer she is. Cathy Strickland has created a coarse carny lady called irene, well worded former English Department head called Maureen and a defensive netball coach called Alsion who looks to score on dating sites. Smith peels back their fading lives and reveals their inner battles for respect , redemption and a better future, with good humour and some harsh home truths." MATT BYRNE

SUMMARY:Off The Page July 30th
DESCRIPTION:Alana Valentine is an award-winning theatre and film-maker of international renown. Her stage plays include Parramatta Girls , Run Rabbit Run, and Savage Grace. Her short films are Mother Love, The Witnesses, and Reef Dreaming. She is the author and producer of 15 original works for radio broadcast, 4 of which have received AWGIE nominations. Her multi-media work includes an installation at the Museum of Sydney and a waterscreen installation in Sydney’s Darling Harbour and she has received a Centenary Medal for her work on the Centenary of Federation. Excepts from his latest work will be performed by actors from Thirty Two Degrees and directed by Alex Galeazzi. Also appearing will be renowned poet and publisher, Chris Mansell. Music for the evening is courtesy of the very talented Alice Rae of Country Town Collective. The night will be MC’d by Darwin’s own Louisa Rebgetz. SUMMARY:Blue Bar Friday in July
DESCRIPTION:Blue Bar Friday is welcomes Melbourne Jazz duet Swinging Both Ways The husband and wife jazz duo. Kimba and Ryan fell in love over music and since then, they've embarked on a musical journey best described as ‘sublimely haphazard’. Both Kimba and Ryan are sometime fixtures in the Melbourne jazz scene (when not busy birthing and raising their family band members), and have played all the major jazz venues in town. Some performance highlights include the Kyoto jazz festival, the Edinburgh festival, performances at the Australian Embassy in Paris and the St Kilda Festival. Their unique and inspired sound draws on a wide canon of jazz, ancient blues, Japanese traditional music, and includes the odd Tom Waits cover. SUMMARY:Calling Me Home The Best of Sara Storer
DESCRIPTION: Since the release of her landmark album “Chasing Buffalo” in 2001, Sara Storer has claimed her place as one of Australia’s most respected singer / songwriters with a platinum and 3 gold album certifications to her credit. In a chapter about Sara from the Sue Williams book, “Women of the Outback”, iconic singer / songwriter Paul Kelly said: “Sara’s songs are grounded in real stories. You know she’s paid attention, heard the bush waking up in the morning, listened to the worries thrashed out at the kitchen table, smelt dry summer wheat up close, dreamed of far away places in a bedroom with a window on a big sky, driven miles on dirt and bitumen and fallen in and out of love. She’s found her own way to sing the stories that are all around her and then inside her bubbling out. She doesn’t copy over-emotive, fake sincere twangy country singers from overseas. She’s found her own restraint and steel and lets her songs do their sweet, sly work.” Calling Me Home, is a celebration of Sara’s career to date and features a number of new recordings as well as live tracks and couple of re-workings – along with, of course, many of Sara’s hits and audience favorites. Joining Sara will be her musicians and co-producers of her album, Matt Fell and Josh Schuberth (most recently in Darwin as part of Josh Pyke’s live band) to ensure that the album recordings receive the treatment they deserve in a live environment. Listen to Sara's single Calling me Home Book now as tickets are limited and these shows are sure to sell out! Either book through Sara's website www.sarastorer.com.au or phone 1300 762 545
