"A gaping hate f#*! to all who believe theatre to be a high art form produced by the lowly…" - The Black Lung Theatre

Residency and Development of New Work by The Black Lung Theatre at Arte Moris with members of Bibi Bulak MARCH 2010

The Black Lung Theatre is a borderline-psychotic not-for-profit Melbourne collective devoted to experimental, devised and avant-garde theatre. Anticlimactic, brutal, and a little unsettling, The Black Lung Theatre are rapidly gaining a reputation as the new iconoclasts of Melbourne theatre, developing a significant cultish repertoire, and winning multiple awards from both the Melbourne and Adelaide Fringe Festivals.
See Alison Croggan’s reviews of Black Lung’s Melbourne works

Since 2000, Bibi Bulak, the ‘Crazy Goats’ have established themselves as East Timor’s premier performance arts company. In the world’s newest nation, Bibi Bulak creates work that is made by & for East Timorese in the lingua franca Tetum. Based in Dili at the Arte Moris Cultural Centre, Bibi Bulak also runs workshops training young Timorese.

CULTURAL EXCHANGE

In March 2010 the Black Lung will begin a one week development of a new project with members of Bibi-Bulak in Dili produced by 32˚ – Brown’s Mart Producing Hub.
The two co-artistic directors of Black Lung, Tom Wright and Thomas Henning will be joined by 32˚ Creative Producer Alex Ben-Mayor and cinematographer and filmmaker Andrew Frazer to document this exciting first stage process.

The irreverent and anarchic work of The Black Lung appears to resonate with members of Bibi-Bulak, whom Wright forged connection with during the filming of Balibo and whom he describes as “the first real subculture in Timor, the first outsiders.”

The process of melding two aesthetics from two vastly different theatre companies holds great potential for cultural and artistic pollination and the creation of a unique work made with Darwin’s closest neighbour.

“The possibility of making work with a fledgling company in a fledgling democracy is exciting to say the least” – Alex Ben-Mayor

The second stage will see the company collaborate with a NT based visual artist as designer for the project.

A further month-long development late in 2010 will culminate in a showing of the work in Dili and 32˚ is currently seeking presenters for other seasons of the work across Australia.
It is anticipated that the work will be presented in Darwin in 2011 after national presentations.

The creative team will be posting comments on the development as it unfolds in Timor Leste in the coming weeks (internet permitting!) so check this thread for further updates …

The Darwin Comedy Club presents the internationally acclaimed hit show Shaggers for one night only in Darwin before it heads to the 2010 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The Shaggers Show has been presented at the Edinburugh Fringe Festival, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Montreal Comedy Festival to name a few world wide.

Nik Coppin [UK], Marcel Lucont [France], Cath Styles [Melbourne], Craig Zee [Darwin] and John Burgos [Melbourne] bring you Shaggers. A comedy show about…. well… Shagging!

The Age described the show like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get! Reviewers have claimed this show is impossible to review because the line up is always changing.
