Chipping away at the bookshelves whenever we get a spare moment, we have already catalogued over 200 plays, but there are still gems waiting to be unearthed. Love a good musical? Ever wanted to have a go but been just a little to shy? Well hide no more ladies because “Tru Razzle” cabaret classes have come to Darwin and will help you to discover the inner performer or theatre buff inside you!

Don’t worry if you can’t dance, sing or act like the big Broadway Divas – that’s not who these classes are for. You will be encouraged to just experience the fun of musical theatre in a safe, supportive environment and who knows what talents you will uncover along the way!

Of course, if you are bit of a hand at performing, then these classes will add a bit of “sparkle” to those existing talents.
And for those who don’t necessarily want to be out front, there will be plenty of backstage or support roles needed for future shows.

At the end of the 8 week journey, you can be involved in “Chicago Nights” that will have enough razzle dazzle to shake the shyest girl out of her lounge room and onto centre stage!!

So dust off those fishnets and sequins ladies, and join us at Brown’s Mart from the 21st of June for an incredible 8 weeks of musical theatre fun and frivolity!

Since starting, tutors Daniel Cunningham and Ella Watson-Russell have focussed on warm-up and preparation techniques, the speaking voice, script analysis, the use of self as a dramatic source, Theatre craft, Greek theatre, working in the abstract, Commedia del’ Arte, Theatre of the Middle Ages, Clowning and Buffon.

In weeks to come, the group will work on generating original material for performance as well as approaching Shakespeare.
Feedback from participants has highlighted the lack of intensive training of this kind for actors in Darwin. “It’s so great to actually have the time to sink your teeth into this stuff” said one participant.
“As the weeks progress it has become clear that the skills base of the participants has grown hugely” says tutor Daniel Cunningham. “They have a remarkable ability to work as an ensemble for a group who have been together for such a short time. They support each other wonderfully and some of the work they are producing is not only hilarious, but touching and sophisticated as well.”

Splendid is open to young and emerging artists (under 30 years old or in the first 5 years of their practice) who work in the visual arts, theatre, dance, design, installation, architecture, digital media, sound, text, community arts and other creative pursuits.

The program includes a residential Arts Lab, mentorship and opportunities to promote your work to major festival audiences in Australia and internationally.

Selected cross-artform projects developed in the Lab will be designed to premiere at Splendour in the Grass 2011 and other music festivals.

We welcome applications from artists exploring participatory experiences such as:
live performance and/or inter-activity in networked environments
creative agency for audiences, thus blurring the lines between ‘creator’ and ‘viewer’
mixed or augmented realities that enhance public space and facilitate the interaction between diverse communities.
innovative processes for artistic collaborations that involve new partners and resources
