We’ve been running the First Nations Writing Program for a few years now – first time writers are welcome to bring anything at all: a song, a poem, a short scene of dialogue or just a very rough idea. It’s always inspiring to see how these early beginnings develop into a potential bigger story. The program is supportive of emerging writers and their needs. It’s a safe space where writers can share culturally and artistically and learn from each other – you won’t regret applying

What are we looking for?

New ideas for scripts from First Nations artists. Scripts may be at any stage of development from an initial idea, a handful of pages of dialogue, one or two scenes, a treatment or a rough draft, poems, songs or other forms.

How will it work?

Writers will work alongside Fred to develop their ideas. Discussion, exercises and the reading of the scripts will assist artists to advance their ideas to the next stage of development. Writers will be paid a wage for the week and will be given access to computers, the internet and printing facilities.

How do I apply and when is it due?

Application is via an Expression of Interest form. The deadline is close of business August 23rd, 2021. Online EOI is available via the link below. Applications will also be accepted as emailed video or audio files.

“The First Nations Writing program has been running at Brown’s Mart since 2019.  Led by Bunuba man Fred Copperwaite, the program gives artists the opportunity to progress their ideas towards performance. It is tailored to the individuals’ requirements utilising Fred’s decades of experience. The First Nations writing program is for someone with an initial idea, a well-advanced script and everything in between.” – Sean Pardy
