Evening Reads: Bethany by Rachael Chisholm

Evening Reads@7.30pm

Brown’s Mart Productions is pleased to present their inaugural script-in-hand play readings series of established and new works. Open to the public, these one-night only performances are part of Brown’s Mart’s mission to develop local artists’ directing and acting skills by performing for live audiences in a casual atmosphere with minimal production elements.

On a Thursday each month of the dry season we will present readings of different texts, chosen by individual Darwin based theatre Directors.

Bethany (working title) by Rachael Chisholm.

The Playwright and Director:

Rachael Chisholm is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander actor and emerging playwright from Darwin. She is a graduate of NIDA’s 3 years acting course, where she worked with some of the country’s most established theatre practitioners.

Rachael has also worked in broadcasting as a producer, writer, presenter, and editor and in 2018 worked on the Australian film Top End Wedding as a production intern.

Rachael took part in the ATYP Fresh Ink mentoring program (2018) for emerging writers and this rewarding experience has led Rachael to pursue and new creative path in writing.

As an actor, Rachael made a return to the stage playing Cherry in Cosi (Brown’s Mart Theatre Productions, 2019). For the Evening Reads Rachael will make her debut as a Director, directing her original work Bethany (working title).

The Play:
Jim thought he broke the cycle.
Marlene survived the cycle.
Taylor is living in the cycle,
and Anthony is being pulled towards the cycle.

Anthony Williams is living life to the fullest, he’s popular at school and on his Footy team. The favourite of his family and a hero to his little sister, Beth. He’s a laid-back class clown, who wouldn’t hurt a fly.

However, a tragedy strikes the Williams family and Anthony suddenly finds himself falling into the pattern that his family is all too aware of.

Can Anthony break the cycle of violence that seems to haunt his family?
